The physical drawbacks and risks that come with smoking are evident and are known by all. But smoking also comes with certain mental issues. Although the ground reason why people smoke may differ from individual to individual, understanding the intellect behind why they do so might help people to stop.
- Tobacco and addiction
The involvement of biological factors in tobacco determines how brain responds to the nicotine. When a smoke puff is taken, the nicotine dose reaches up to the brain within seconds. Firstly, the concentration and mood is improved by nicotine which in turn decreases stress and anger, reduces the appetite and relaxes the muscle. This idea where people turn to tobacco to ease signs of stress is known to be ‘self-medication’. Stress could affect any of us when we feel helpless and are not able to cope with pressure. It might drain us physically by giving us breathlessness or headaches also leaving people with anxiousness and irritable feeling. Stress often leads people to smoke or drink alcohol and alter our behaviour accordingly.

In U.K, the rate of smoking among people who are depressed are doubly high than the ones who are not depressed. People who face depression find it more difficult to give up tobacco and their efforts are to no avail as their withdrawal symptoms are severe. Dopamine is a chemical that nicotine stimulates and it helps trigger positive feelings. People who are depressed lack these feelings and hence use tobacco to increase the supply of this chemical. However, it is said that people often start smoking before depression, hence it can’t rightly be concluded that stress causes them to smoke. Nor does one can say that people smoke because of depression, hence, the two shares a complex relationship.
- Tobacco and anxiety
Research states that instead tobacco working as a relaxation for the public, it triggers and increases tension and anxiety among them. As nicotine is known to create an amusing sense of pleasure, people continue to smoke under the impression that it reduces anxiety. However, since this feeling is temporary, the withdrawal symptoms increase cravings. As a matter of fact, it does not in any way deal with anxiety or its causes.
